17:18, Malin head, the most nothern part of Ireland. About duck-tape and cycling.
I will start with a photo showing my camping site for last night. But there's much more to
tell you.
Normally I would only start making a story after I had diner, something
to close the day. But something interrupted this. I will get back to this later,
I will first tell you how the day started (just to keep in the correct
order).
The reason for already starting now has to do with this...
Last night I stayed at the Giant causeway. Hoping that this morning the weather
would be better so I could get some sun-rise pictures. But early in the moring
it was ... raining. But around 7:00 the curtains showed clear signs of ...
sunshine. So I rushed out of bed, brushed my teeth, washed my face and took
my camera's and flash and went to the coastline. I now have 2 complete films
(36 exposures each) only with photo's of the causeway. But it is a great place.
There are a lot of warnings for falling rock. When I came back this morning (I was
the first to get there), there were indeed some big rocks scattered on the road.
I have a lot of nice pictures on film, but this one also got my attention.
This was the only column where I could find sigaret filters. Nicely together as if it
was an ashtray. (Don't be afraid, I did not spot any rubbish at other places)
So then I left the causeway to get to the west. My plan was to make a scenic drive
to be near Tory Island at the evening. Ian told me this is a great place. Since
it is remote, there are not a lot of ferries leaving so I need to be there early
to get a return on the same day.
While I was on my way I came across a place called 'castlerock'. My brother
is a big fan of Stephen King. A lot of his stories take place in Castlerock-Maine in
the U.S.A. But there also appears to be one here. Unfortunatly they did not
have postcards...
While I was in Skerries saturday, the photographer told me about a
road she liked. I tried to follow this road as much as possible. The R238, R242 Carndonagh
to Malin I liked best.
So then I went on my way. I first wanted to make a quick stop at the most
northern point of Ireland, just to have lunch. Malin Head. The weather had improved a lot, the
views were great so what more can one ask for?
As far north as I can get...
When I finished my lunch, I was planning on taking a look around and take
some shots. But then a lorry arrived. At first I thought it was just another
one of the tourists, staying for a few minutes and then leaving again. But it
was slightly different. Appearently about 17 mad-man/woman were cylcing from
Mizen Head in the south all the way up to this most northern part. A trip
of 600 Miles That's 1000km throug hilly and windy landscape. This was just
the place where they would finish. Since I had 'nothing better to do', I lended
them a hand and some duck-tape to prepare the finishline.
Preparing the finish line. My camper was also usefull as a high-point.
Celebrations as the heros arrived. They collected 70.000 euro for cancer charities
with only 17 people.
Just one of the bikes. I don't think I need to mention that I have lot's of
photo's. I never shot a roll that fast...
One welcoming sign, made on the spot. You might recognise the duck-tape...
The organiser-hero. He made a speech thanking everybody that helped make
the trip a succes!
As some of you know, I have plans to become a 'professional traveler' maybe once. This
is my first step that way. I 'earned' my first pint!
One 'problem' (it is great, but I keep stuck here while writing) are the
people I meet. But each time I meet people, I like it. The last one just
pointed me out to a spot I must see, a 4000 year old fort. So instead of staying here
for some sun-set photo's I will be on the way soon. And sometimes the people can make
a photograph with me on it!
This morning I was planning to drive towards Tory Island. Then when I got 'stuck' here
I planned to stay here until sunset. But now I got a tip for the old fortress Brian or Ailach (or so)
near Bridge end. It should be even better for taking photo's. So thats where I am going now!
The view while writing.
